THE BIGGEST BIRD ON THE PLANET HAS LANDED AT THULA THULA.

They can’t fly but they can run !

Twelve ostriches are now roaming the 5000 hectares wildlife reserve of Thula Thula.

The Ostrich claims the title of the largest and heaviest bird globally, native to Africa. Renowned for its flightlessness, powerful legs, and long neck, the Ostrich is an adept runner, reaching speeds of up to 45 miles per hour (72 km) and 12 of these magnificent birds are now wild and free at Thula Thula, their new forever home.

The beautiful grasslands and savannas on the new land are the perfect habitat for these ostriches who are about a year and half old and have been raised in Zululand.

Ostriches are omnivores, although most of their diet is plant-based. They mainly eat leafy greens, flowering plants, roots, grasses and succulents. They also occasionally feed on fallen fruit or small animals such as mice, lizards, frogs, grasshoppers and locusts.

ALL COMING TO DISCOVER THE NEW LAND

We are closely observing the behavior of the animals on this new land, and we're excited to see so many species already exploring it.

Among the animals we have seen so far are elephants, rhinos, ostriches, buffalo, zebras, wildebeests, zebras, nyalas, impalas, and grassland birds. We are now waiting for some giraffe to cross over and enjoy this magnificent landscape.

Expanding the game reserve with more land for wildlife habitat also means more land to protect for their safety.
Another APU (anti poaching Unit) has been set up in the new area.

Protecting and Preserving Wildlife.

Game reserves are essential for protecting and preserving wildlife.
They provide a safe and natural habitat for animals to thrive in and the new land will accommodate the growing wildlife population and aid in maintaining a balanced ecosystem and promoting biodiversity.

OUR VOLUNTEERS ACADEMY AND WILDLIFE REHABILITATION CENTRE

To educate and inspire about nature and wildlife conservation.

The Thula Thula Volunteers Academy is not the usual working holidays, but more of an educational experience,

Volunteers get to experience both sides of the academy, from the work aspect in the morning, where they learn the work of game reserve maintenance, as clearing alien invasive plants and control soil erosion runoff, to the more educational afternoons, where they focus on elephant or rhino behavior and tracking, trees identification and more.

Volunteers helping in the wildlife rehabilitation center.
Activities like clearing boma for future animal arrivals, and constructing new cages and shelters are some of the things we wouldn’t be able to do without the help of our ever eager volunteers.

We would like to thank all our volunteers for their participation to the success of our Academy.
Fees paid by our volunteers are actually donations to the Thula Thula registered non profit THE SOUTH AFRICAN CONSERVATION FUND, where all funds contribute to our conservation projects.
