HAPPY 60th BIRTHDAY GRANDE DAME NANA!
The story of our legendary Nana is a lesson of resilience and survival.
Admired and respected by all, she teaches us the qualities of leadership and strength with a gentle approach.
A Matriarch leading the herd in unity with the care and interest of all, for the greater good.
We celebrate her 60th birthday this year.
She arrived at Thula Thula in August 1999 with her herd, all seven of them, traumatized elephants with pending death sentence, and found a haven of peace at Thula Thula.
CELEBRATION MONTH!
25 years ago, in August 1999, a herd of seven elephants arrived in the middle of the night at Thula Thula from Mpumalanga. A herd of traumatized elephants qualified as “rogue” and “problem elephants”.
A night to remember, and the beginning of a life changing adventure for us at Thula Thula.
This video created by the film producer Robin Goode was released 12 years ago, after Lawrence passing, showing the work done to help this rescued herd to regain trust in humans.
TRUST IS EARNED.
A great success story that you can discover in the international bestseller “The elephant Whisperer” by Lawrence Anthony.
25 years later…
This special herd who survived so many death threats as considered as “dangerous” and “escape artists” settled down in their new wildlife paradise of Thula Thula in August 1999.
The two herds, one with Nana and her daughter Nandi as leaders, and the other one, previously Frankie’s herd, is now led by her young daughter Marula.
An immense pleasure to watch all of the 28 elephants enjoying their new territory with the achievement of the expansion of the land, which makes Thula Thula today over 5000 hectares, .
More land is in negotiation at the moment with a local community, as this will allow to the herd for more space and new births.
Creating more space for wildlife within protected areas has become an urgent necessity as human population increases.
A priority at Thula Thula as part of our conservation projects, as well as introducing more endangered species in the near future.
